ICYMI: Clinton Makes Public Push for Antitrust Bill to Rein in Tech Monopolies

Clinton’s remarks come from an interview with Recode’s Kara Swisher at the Texas Tribune Festival

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, The Tech Oversight Project spotlighted former U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s continued public push for S.2992, the American Innovation and Choice Online Act, and antitrust efforts that rein in Big Tech’s most predatory practices. The remarks came from an on-stage interview with Recode’s Kara Swisher at the Texas Tribune Festival in Austin, Texas. Selections from her remarks are below, and the segment can be viewed in part here.

“[Sen.] Amy [Klobuchar] has done a terrific job in shepherding through two bills – one hasn’t gone anywhere, the other an antitrust bill that is the subject of an enormous PR campaign against her and against the bill,” said former U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. “You can make an argument from both sides of the political divide as to why we have to enforce antitrust against the tech oligopolies and in some cases frankly monopolies – why we have to do more to protect privacy. Don’t make the perfect be the enemy of the good. Take what the E.U. has passed and build on it.”

“Hillary Clinton’s continued support for the ˆ is proof positive that antitrust efforts are wildly popular with the Democratic base and are sensible policies that will help curb Big Tech’s predatory practices and abuses,” said Sacha Haworth, Executive Director of the Tech Oversight Project. “From battleground state popularity to GenZ support, it’s time for Senator Schumer to heed the call of so many in the party and hold the antitrust vote he promised earlier this summer. The clock is ticking.”
