“Pass it. Pass it. Pass it. Pass it. Pass it.” – POTUS
WASHINGTON, DC – Today, The Tech Oversight Project issued the following statement praising President Joe Biden’s endorsement of the bipartisan Kids Online Safety Act (KOSA) and the Children and Teens’ Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA 2.0). Both bills are scheduled to be marked up in the Senate Commerce Committee tomorrow at 10:00 AM.
“Big Tech’s predatory business model that designs addicting products, keeps children glued to their algorithms, and profits from their screen time needs to end. Platforms like Youtube, Instagram, Twitter and TikTok are the root cause of the youth mental crisis and have used and abused children’s data while serving them disturbing content,” said Kyle Morse, Deputy Executive Director of the Tech Oversight Project. “Social media will always fail to self-regulate if there is a profit incentive in the way, which is why we need to pass KOSA and COPPA 2.0. Young Americans, parents, educators, and medical professionals are calling out for safety-by-design protections as the default setting on social media platforms, and these bipartisan bills will take a meaningful step in the right direction toward protecting children online. We are grateful for President Biden’s support and look forward to working with the administration and Congressional partners to get these bills over the finish line.”
