The Tech Oversight Project Issues Statement on Bombshell U.S. v. Google Finding Regarding $26B Default Agreements

Oct 27, 2023

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, The Tech Oversight Project issued the following statement after a bombshell disclosure in the U.S. v. Google trial smashed initial estimates about the value of Google’s default search engine deals. Reporting from Bloomberg exposed that the true figure is $26.3 billion, significantly larger than first thought.

“Today’s findings completely obliterate Google’s legal argument, and it underscores just how far they will go to protect their illegal search monopoly. The Department of Justice has deftly outlined how Google Search is the lynchpin of its business model that feeds into its other revenue streams, and this massive 26-billion-dollar figure assigns motive to Google’s actions and proves that they will bribe competitors to stay out of their market, which ultimately hurts consumers,” said Kyle Morse, Deputy Executive Director of the Tech Oversight Project. “If Google is so confident that they have the best search product, why are they spending the GDP of a small country to be the default option on nearly every device in the world?”
