The Tech Oversight Project Slams Meta in Response to Blockbuster Senate Whistleblower Revelations

Apr 09, 2025

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, The Tech Oversight Project issued the following statement after the Senate Judiciary Subcommittee on Crime and Terrorism hearing featured Sarah Wynn-Williams, the only senior executive from Meta to come forward as a whistleblower. During the hearing, Wynn-Williams and Senators revealed how Meta undermined U.S. national security and economic interests by helping China compete with the United States, as early as 2015, by sharing data on U.S. users and cutting-edge technology, such as artificial intelligence and internet infrastructure, with the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). The company also helped the CCP build censorship tools that would allow them to control the flow of information online for American and Chinese citizens.

“The Meta whistleblower and Senators on the committee put it best today when they said Meta has repeatedly thrown U.S. national security under the bus when it shared cutting-edge technology and data on U.S. users with the CCP — and furthermore, lied to Congress repeatedly about it. As Senator Hawley demanded, Mr. Free Speech Mark Zuckerberg needs to stop censoring the whistleblowers and come before Congress to give some answers. And we agree,” said Sacha Haworth, Executive Director of The Tech Oversight Project.
