ICYMI: Big Tech Thinks It’s Bigger Than God

Nov 10, 2025

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, The Tech Oversight Project called out a16z cofounder and Meta Board Member Marc Andreessen for mocking the Pope (yes, the actual Pope) for calling for AI to be developed in a way that’s good for humanity. On Friday, Pope Leo XIV tweeted that the Catholic Church “calls all builders of #AI to cultivate moral discernment as a fundamental part of their work—to develop systems that reflect justice, solidarity, and a genuine reverence for life.” Apparently, to Marc Andreessen and Big Tech CEOs, asking anything of them is a cardinal sin.

“Silicon Valley’s self-styled God-Kings are so used to reflexively lashing out at anyone who dares question them, they label anyone calling for AI safety ‘the antichrist’ and now, apparently, attack the Pope. These are the same people funding pedo-bots, cheating apps, and literally merging humans with robots. These clowns aren’t just out of step with society; they’re out of touch with reality,” said Sacha Haworth, Executive Director of The Tech Oversight Project.

Following his tweet, the a16Z leader was swiftly dunked on by all corners of the internet for feigning moral authority while funding gambling apps, cheating apps, and bot farms, prompting Andreesen to eventually delete it. Rather than take the bait, the Pope issued another statement on AI, saying, “Technological development has brought, and continues to bring, significant benefits to humanity. In order to ensure true progress, it is imperative that human dignity and the common good remain resolute priorities for all, both individuals and public entities.” Andreessen’s papal misstep comes on the heels of fellow Big Tech provocateur Peter Thiel’s four-part lecture series, which seeks to paint anyone advocating for AI safety as ‘the antichrist.’
