The Tech Oversight Project Slams Launch of ChatGPT Health, Amid OpenAI Product Liability Lawsuits Leading to Suicide and Murder

WASHINGTON, DC – The Tech Oversight Project slammed OpenAI for launching “ChatGPT Health” amid a growing wave of product liability lawsuits linking the company to deaths by suicide and murder:

“Under Sam Altman’s watch, ChatGPT drove minors to suicidal ideation, coached them through how to take their own lives, and dissuaded them from seeking medical help and counseling when they needed it most. Nothing could be more audacious than rolling a deadly product out at scale and asking people to fork over their most personal and sensitive information,” said Sacha Haworth, Executive Director of The Tech Oversight Project. “OpenAI is actively being sued for the role its products played in driving people to suicide and murder, and in partnering with OpenAI and the damage it will have on children and teens, companies like Apple should be considered complicit.”

Active litigation over user harm: OpenAI currently faces a quickly mounting number of lawsuits alleging ChatGPT interactions contributed to suicide, delusions, and severe psychological distress among users, including minors.

An aggressive data grab: OpenAI’s announcement of ChatGPT “Health” notes that it links directly to Apple-supported fitness apps and data, specifically citing Apple Health, Function, and MyFitnessPal. Personal health data is highly valued by data brokers and associated with a number of serious privacy risks.

OpenAI’s long track record of sidelining safety: The Tech Oversight Project and the Midas Project’s The OpenAI Files documents evidence from over 200 sources, including testimonies from dozens of ex-employees, describing efforts to silence criticism through restrictive NDA agreements and threats to vested equity; multiple failures to live up to past safety commitments; and a pattern of prioritizing product launches over responsible development.
