Tech Oversight Project Statement on Big Tech’s MDL Settlement

May 21, 2026

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, The Tech Oversight Project issued the following statement in response to news that Meta had joined Google, TikTok, and Snap in settling the first federal school district bellwether case, which the Big Tech defendants had chosen as the first case among hundreds of districts at trial. The next upcoming case in the federal and state social media addiction trials will be the R.K.C. trial in California state court and the Tennessee Attorney General’s case, which will both be held in July. The next federal school district will be in January 2027 and will feature the Tucson Unified School District.

“That Google, Meta, Snap, and TikTok are running away from the very test cases they chose speaks volumes about the troves of evidence stacked up against them, and it’s why Congress needs to put their foot on the gas to hold the companies accountable. We cannot continue to live in a world where Big Tech executives grade their own homework. The time to pass comprehensive legislation that protects children and teens is now,” said Sacha Haworth, Executive Director of The Tech Oversight Project. “This is not the end of the road. There are hundreds of federal and state cases left to be tried in the court of law, and we look forward to the transparency and accountability that comes from putting Big Tech on trial.”
