WASHINGTON, DC – Today, The Tech Oversight Project spotlighted unhinged remarks from Meta’s longtime Chief Technology Officer, Andrew Bosworth, promising lawsuits for any employee caught leaking information or whistleblowing. Despite Mark Zuckerberg and the company claiming to be dogged defenders for free speech, Meta’s lawfare threats to staff and its current effort to silence and financially ruin Meta whistleblower Sarah Wynn-Williams aren’t just a direct contradiction of their past statements, it underscores that the company will stop at nothing to cover up legal wrongdoing and unethical behavior. Notably, Meta has not pursued defamation claims against Wynn-Williams – an indication that it cannot legally dispute her claims. 

Meta’s slash-and-burn legal tactics are even drawing the ire of Congress. Late last week Senator Josh Hawley opened yet another investigatory request into Meta – this time focused on the company lying to Congress, obstructing Congress from carrying out its oversight responsibilities, and abusing the legal system to muzzle Wynn-Williams and future whistleblowers. 

“With Mark Zuckerberg and his hand-picked henchman promising to ruin the lives of anyone that exposes Meta’s wrongdoing, it’s blatantly obvious to anyone that this company is a serial lawbreaker that deserves to have the book thrown at them. Meta is going scorched earth because they want Sarah Wynn-Williams to be the last whistleblower to come forward, and they will do whatever it takes to instill the fear of financial and personal ruin into every employee. It’s a disgrace and proves that the rot at Meta goes all the way to the top,” said Sacha Haworth, Executive Director of The Tech Oversight Project.
