Politico: Schumer’s office says he plans to hold vote on tech antitrust bill

Aug 04, 2022

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, the Tech Oversight Project issued the following statement praising Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer for concretely communicating that he plans to bring S.2992, the American Innovation and Choice Online Act (AICO) for a vote. The bipartisan bill soared out of the Senate Judiciary Committee in January by a margin of 16-6 – with nearly 3 in 4 committee members supporting AICO. Following months of grassroots action and advocacy, this is the first time that Schumer has communicated that a floor vote for bipartisan antitrust legislation was in his immediate plans. The full story from Politico can be found here.

“Signaling an imminent floor vote is a statement of intent and brings us one step closer to passing historic antitrust reform that will improve our economy, give control of the internet back to users, and protect vulnerable children and families,” said Sacha Haworth, Executive Director of the Tech Oversight Project. “Google, Apple, Facebook, and Amazon have operated unchecked for years. They have lied to Congress, spread disinformation, and targeted children with violent and addictive content. They cannot be trusted, and the American people support punishing Big Tech for the wrongs they’ve committed. We applaud Leader Schumer for heeding their call and look forward to helping get this bipartisan bill over the finish line.”
